The Benefits Of Elementary School Science Fairs

An elementary school science fair is a great way to motivate elementary school children to be more creative in their science projects.  After all, a science fair project is not like any other science project done in school.  This time, the children will have an audience; their parents, siblings and friends will be there to cheer and support them.  They will also have to formally present their science project to the science fair judges.

A science fair, aside from motivating and inspiring students, is also a great way for children to get accustomed to speaking to a large audience.  Moreover, they will also get to experience healthy competition.  And if their work is up to par, they can experience the sense of accomplishment that comes with a job well done.

Simple or Complex Projects

Elementary school science fair projects can be simple or complex.  It should all depend on the children's grade level and the particular science concepts that they have learned.  Definitely, children should choose a science fair project that they are truly interested in.  This will make the science project more fun and exciting.

Of course, the safety of the children should also be a foremost consideration in picking a science fair project.  Therefore, science project advisers should steer children away from hazardous experiments (e.g. those that include heating and mixing volatile chemicals).  Moreover, the parents of the children should be fully apprised of the project details so that they can help keep an eye on the children when they are performing their science experiments at home.

Finally, elementary school children should choose science projects that they can easily accomplish in the prescribed time period.  This way, the children can be sure of completing their projects and thus being able to participate in the science fair.

Deciding on a Science Project

Elementary school students have a lot of options when it comes to science fair projects.  The easiest way for choosing a topic is to recall the science concepts that have already been learned.  If the children are taking up basic chemistry, then a science fair project in line with the course would be very relevant.  Since the concepts are recently learned, moreover, the children should have an easier time designing a relevant project.
